There is a change in procedure regarding scanning requests from 1st August 2010.

To comply with Copyright Licensing Agency regulations, from 1st August 2010 all scanning requests for the UEL Print Centre need to be requested by a Scanning Request form, which you can access online at http://www.uel.ac.uk/marketing/print/digital-scanning/

After submission of the form - and once details have been checked and approved, the following steps need to be followed :

  • Sign the copyright notice, which goes in front of the digitised material
  • Send in the copyright notice with the items requested to be scanned via internal mail or drop off in person  (Room EBG.12 Docklands Campus)
  • If requested it may then be incorporated into the relevant course in the VLE

If you have further questions, please email  the print centre at print.centre@uel.ac.uk.

If you have questions regarding copyright or exempted material, please contact copyright@uel.ac.uk.

If appropriate copyright clearance has been obtained for use of the image it may be used in a presentation and posted onto UEL Plus.  You gain copyright clearance by either getting permission from the copyright owner of the image or by obtaining a licence from the relevant licensing society to use the image in PowerPoint presentations and for posting within a VLE.

The image could be used in presentations and on a VLE without prior permission from the copyright owner in some situations. These are 1) where the image is out of copyright, i.e., if the duration of copyright has elapsed or expired. The duration of copyright in images is the life time of its author plus a period of 70 years from the end of the year in which the author dies and 2) where the use of image is permitted by the terms and conditions of the website where it was posted.

If the agreement governing the publication of the papers, i.e. the agreement between the concerned author and the journal publisher, does not prohibit dissemination or using the PDF for teaching/research purposes, they may be disseminated and used in teaching and research.

A tutor/lecturer may put his own personal copy of a book/journal article in a short loan collection for students to consult.  Copying from the book is permitted under the terms of the CLA licence to which UEL subscribes to. However there are restrictions on how much can be copied.

For further information on what you can copy, please refer to the CLA Higher Education Licence guidelines and also our handy LLS copyright Lecturer’s guide and Student’s guide.

UEL has a licence from the Newspaper Licensing Agency (NLA) therefore photocopies of a newspaper article may be made for purposes of instruction or examination.  Any such photocopying however should be within the terms of the NLA licence.

If in doubt, please contact us via our Ask a Librarian service.
